West Coast Group composers John Cage, Henry Cowell, and Lou Harrison wrote some of the earliest works for percussion ensemble. What resulted in a truly integrated and collective creative experience. The case of the video-dance added other artistic processes into the creation such as the positioning and the proximity of the camera and image editing. Likewise, the dancers improvisation led to a block-units oriented improvisation by the composer in real time in the dance studio, this process allowed an even deeper integration between sound and body movement. It was found that the first tendency of the dancers is to create movements that are in accordance with the music (musical visualization) and then, as they become familiar with the sound material, the dancers create richer relationships and less in agreement with the music (counterpoint and echo). Through this research it was realized that there is a relationship between the musical materials and the quality of improvised movements accomplished by the dancers. The sessions of improvisation were filmed in order to allow reflection on the concepts studied and eventually acquired a life of its own, rich and spontaneous results were found. The music production software Logic Pro 8 was used to record, edit and process the pieces, as they had assumed the poetic incorporation of indeterminate composition. To this end, three compositions: Drone, Dolcerino Plano Primo were used to boost the body movements of the dancers during these sessions in the dance studio. There were four sessions of improvisation with four dancers from Balé do Teatro Guaira as preparation for the filming of a video-dance, Vagão, inside a tube station (bus stop) in the city of Curitiba.
The choreographer Eunice de Oliveira was invited to collaborate in the creative process of this research. The practices associated with improvisation and indeterminate practices pave the way for a more spontaneous experience between music and dance. The concept of integration refers to a creative process where two or more creators contribute to develop a collaborative production. The following research arose from the need to investigate the ways in which the worlds of music and dance can interact within the artistic creation, based on the notions of integration and improvisation.
